Immediately after a spectacular presentation worthy of the theatre, culminating in the traditional breaking of a bottle of champagne on the prow, the magnificent motor yacht glided slowly down a special ramp to slip gently into the sea. This was accompanied by the moving notes of the renowned aria “Và pensiero”, born of the musical genius of Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi. It was a thrilling conclusion to the celebrations at the launch ceremony of Checkmate, held towards the end of last year at the Darsena Italia Basin in Viareggio, the historic headquarters of the Benetti shipyard. The Owner, a well known surgeon from Washington DC, was present at the exclusive event in person, accompanied by his family. In addition to the guests of honour, invited privately along with friends, the entire technical staff of Benetti were there after two years working on the construction and fitting out of the prestigious vessel. Checkmate is the 18th hull to be created and delivered to great acclaim in the successful Benetti Vision 145’ line, the top line in the Benetti Class range. CEO of the Azimut Benetti group’s mega yacht division, Vincenzo Poerio, said at the launch ceremony: “We are particularly proud of our latest launch, the 100th fibreglass yacht built at the Viareggio yard since 1998. This is a further demonstration of Benetti’s ability to listen to clients and interpret their specific needs; and above all, it’s another example of a perfect blend of timeless design, world-class quality, safety and an extremely high quality of life on board for both the Owner and crew.” Last but not least, the spectacular Checkmate is currently in the hands of specialist brokerage and management company Northrop & Johnson, which is now using its experience and skills to offer the motor yacht for sale or charter in the Mediterranean and the Caribbean. We now present a full portrait of the new yacht.
