If we are to fully understand Framura, we must take a step back and look at the bigger picture – in particular her Owner’s intellectual background and personality. He adores the seafaring life and has an excellent knowledge of classical culture. When he steps on board his yacht, he wants to feel he’s on a real boat, not in a sushi bar or a luxury hotel suite. He wants a layout that allows him and his guests to spendquality timetogether – not just for a day, but for longer periods in which to share great conversation and the love of fresh air. He feels that comfort is essential, and was keen to involve his nearest and dearest in designing and creating this yacht, which in fact expresses the tastes of his family.
With criteria like these, what better option than a fully custom-built yacht, which allows a wealth of features to be added at will onto a bare shell. Admiral’s 25 years of experience in building aluminium alloy 5083 H 321 yachts made it one of the most obvious choices.

The yard has its roots in the “Cantieri Navali Liguri di Riva Trigoso” under the Ghibli brand, which was purchased in 1962 by renowned pharmaceuticals entrepreneur Aldo Ceccarelli. In 1980 Ceccarelli expanded the businesses by purchasing the Admiral Brand “Cantieri di Lavagna”. This led to the current name CNL (Cantieri Navali di Lavagna). In late 2005 a joint venture was set up with the “Cantieri Mariotti” in Genoa, with the brand AMY (Admiral Mariotti Yachts). CNL is still Italian owned and run by the Ceccarelli family. It has a reputation as an “artisan boutique” yard for luxury yachts.

We’ll start by looking at the design by Andrea Bacigalupo, precisely because of the difference between a fibreglass and an aluminium hull – the possibility to go for total customisation. The design brief was clear: displacement of around 140 tons, around 5000 total horsepower and a top speed of 30 knots. The goal was reached (with tank testing) by using a deep V planing hull, a 14 degree angle of deadrise aft, carefully designed chines, and a length/beam ratio that put the emphasis on the former.
This produces planing speed even at 22 knots and a semi-planing trim from around 10-12 knots, which is excellent for tackling even fairly rough seas quickly and safely.
What’s more, the aluminium construction offers plenty of structural space in the keel for the tanks (24,500 litres of fuel, 4500 litres of freshwater).
This also helps to lower the barycentre structurally. All of this means that during sailing, the yacht has a soft impact on waves and is therefore comfortable, while enjoying great steering stability. Limited rolling in the roadstead makes life on board more pleasant.
In a further nod to comfort, the two 2700-hp MTUs are situated in a very well-soundproofed engine room between frames 3 and 10 (basically in the centre of the aft third). The engines are mounted on soft calibration anti-vibration bearings. This position means they are between 8 and 18 frames from the guests’ and Owner’s cabins, guaranteeing peace and quiet. As the Owner himself says, “I want to hear the sea while I’m sleeping”. [...]
