ISA Yachts, an Adriatic company known for its cutting edge, high-quality yachts, has become part of the Palumbo Superyachts Division of the Palumbo Group, and is now in a position to take on the market with renewed vigour. Some of its ongoing projects include fitting out the 80-metre Columbus, and building the new ISA Alloy 43m, created by Luca Dini, which has recently been sold. In keeping with the shipyard’s tradition, this is a modern yacht both in terms of its shape and living space and one that contains the stylistic features that have always made ISA yachts readily identifiable. In particular here we’re thinking about the structural elements linking the wheelhouse and the upper deck, a trait which has become ISA’s signature and which Luca Dini wanted to include in this project to give a sense of continuity between this 43-metre vessel and the shipyard’s history. We wanted to ask Luca Dini himself how this project came about, and which features were non-negotiable for the client who commissioned it. Dini told us:

“This client dreamed of having a fully aluminium yacht, made in Italy, with a clean and elegant design”.


For this project, you worked on the interior and the exterior, starting from scratch. Which stylistic and conceptual features set the ISA Alloy 43m apart from the shipyard’s other projects? What relationship did you create between the interior and the exterior?

“The first thing that stands out is how clean the lines are. Nothing is excessive. The boat isn’t meant to look  over designed – the idea was to meld the traditions of Italian yacht design with current stylistic elements and solutions, including an innovative layout. While maintaining the external lines, we sought to make the internal spaces as bright and visible as possible. The interior style is in line with, and reflects, some of the features used in the exterior, creating a single in-and-out atmosphere. Actually, Giuseppe Palumbo (CEO ISA Yachts – ed.) gave me carte blanche from the word go, since I had years of experience with the owners while the shipyard’s goal was to offer a new product on the market the design of which was recognisably ISA. This resulted in the creation of what is now quite a rare combination, which has in turn led to the development of a ship that is becoming a series, a marriage of  tradition and modernity”.

Can you describe for us the way the external spaces are divided? How did you create them, in terms of functionality? And what about the interiors?

“We paid particular attention to the internal layout of the beach club, which for a yacht this size was considerably large. The cabins have a traditional layout: four on the lower deck with the owner’s cabin on the forward main deck, but we focused on creating the sky lounge on the upper deck, integrated with a line that at first sight may look like a boat with a raised bridge, the idea being to create the impression of a very sporty boat with a sleek, dynamic line”.

If you were to describe this project in one adjective, which adjective would you choose?

Traditional in its modernity”.

The ISA Alloy 43m is a yacht containing design features typical of this shipyard, such as the sheer sense of power you perceive looking forward from the main deck to the flybridge. Given your brief to come up with an original design offering lots of wide open spaces and a comfortable, bright interior, were the restrictions created by the need to maintain these stylistic features a barrier to your work?

“Absolutely not. I’ve always found it stimulating to reinterpret something from the past, and given that you noticed this yourself I think we have done what the shipyard asked us to do”.

Could you describe for us the solutions implemented in the stern, where the large beach area was developed?

“In this instance, the owner’s decision to avoid having a tender housed at the stern, preferring to use a chase boat, was decisive. This meant it was possible to create a large beach area that people can spend time on in any conditions, without having items there that would disturb its appearance and turn an area that the owner considered really important into a dark, damp room. All of these personal – yet shared – decisions meant that we were able to create a beach area like those normally found on 55 – 60-metre yachts”.

Luca Dini is one of the most active designers on the international yachting scene. His studio designs interiors and exteriors, pushing forward with research. As a designer, he is full of surprises, and is able to work with very different owners and shipyards. During our interview, he told us: “Those who know me also know that, like a true Florentine, I can’t resist a challenge”. Indeed, his projects always have something about them that reflect this need to aim for aesthetics, living spaces and functions that haven’t been tried before. Being firmly grounded in reality sets him apart – everything he puts forward in his designs is original, but also makes functional sense. As mentioned above, with this 43-metre project, the challenge was to meet different needs: the owner’s request for ample living space and an all aluminium build to boost efficiency and obtain a good balance between speed and range. All in all, it is a complex project that needed solutions hitherto untried in a vessel of this size.

The interior comprises five cabins, with the owner’s suite on the main deck enjoying large private open and covered outdoor areas. As the designer told us, one of the features of this yacht was that the owner wanted an exclusive area to relax in during breaks, hence the spacious beach area. This was created by lowering the transom, bringing the surface of the entire area to just a few centimetres above the sea, and it’s far larger than we’re used to seeing on boats of similar sizes. This is one of the most amazing parts of the yacht, but – despite the yacht’s overall dimensions and volume of space – the sleek, sporty profile is equally stunning. This yacht is owned by a true expert and aficionado, and so his requests were all motivated by needs encountered during a lifetime of experience at sea. On the one hand this means making an extra effort in terms of design and construction to meet what are often very personal needs, but for the shipyard these needs are an important source of information leading to the development of solutions that will be available to yachts built in the future. The ISA Alloy 43 is scheduled for delivery in 2019, making it the 34th produced by this shipyard, now part of an industrial group that provides financial backing and valuable technical support, thanks to the commitment of the Palumbo Superyachts Division in the naval and yachting sector.
