Ottantacinque

by Fincantieri Yachts with Pininfarina Group

Yes, they’ve done it again. Yet again the people at Fincantieri Yachts have achieved something really substantial and made headlines at the 2015 Monaco Yacht Show, that exclusive setting for truly magnificent occasions. As the curtain rises, all eyes are on the stage. The spotlights focus and there is thunderous applause from the public for what the Italian shipyard calls the “technology of beauty” to express the idea underlying its philosophy. Or, if you will, the “beauty of technology” works just as well. The leading lights of Fincantieri Yachts and the Pininfarina Group were in Monaco to officially present their magnificent concept project Ottantacinque, an ultra-luxurious mega yacht with a gross tonnage of 2,460 GT. The two Italian companies worked closely together to design this innovative latest-generation vessel with its host of cutting-edge solutions. As before, when Fincantieri and Pininfarina created the legendary Destriero, glorious winner of the Blue Riband award (the much coveted prize for record-breaking Atlantic crossings), the new Ottantacinque now represents the two companies’ ambition to create a mega yacht capable of embodying the highly creative spirit they both share in order to become an iconic standard bearer for Italian design and industry. This becomes clear in the comments of Giuseppe Bono, CEO of Fincantieri Yachts, who said at the event: “We are already one of the very small number of mega yacht builders who manage all the business activities from sale to the product life cycle. Now, thanks to this magnificent design created in partnership with Pininfarina, not only are we enhancing our position within the sector with an industrial collaboration at the highest level, but we are also creating a truly Italian benchmark in a market where, as in all luxury niches, the demand for Italian skills and taste has always been very high.” Fincantieri has brought together substantial resources in this specific niche and has achieved some very important results in the sector, starting with the creation of Fincantieri Yachts, a dedicated business unit focusing on the most exclusive sector of luxury yachting. To date, relying on Fincantieri’s more than two centuries of experience in building large ships, the Yachts Division offers the highest levels of technical design and build quality in the production of vessels with lengths of over 70 metres. Giovanni Romano, Director of Fincantieri Yachts, has this to say on the subject: “We have worked intensively to establish our position on the market through the quality of the yachts we have built to date, which are unanimously recognised as the top of the range, and through the development of new products that allow us to meet the requirements of owners looking for vessels below the 100 metre mark with the same high quality. To do this, we have worked with the best designers to create unique products in terms of technology, aesthetic taste and onboard lifestyle, but with sufficient flexibility to be well suited to the needs of our owners. Ottantacinque is the result of outstanding teamwork and synergy between our team and Pininfarina’s during the development of the concept.”

The Pininfarina Group is internationally recognised as one of the undisputed major players in the world of automotive design, and has been active in the nautical sector since the 1960s, making its mark with its unmistakable style on numerous major projects. Its trademark lower case “f” appears on both special one-off custom projects and serial designs, developed for both sailing and motor vessels. Showing great insight, Pininfarina understood the appealing potential offered by the automotive sector and, in what was an entirely new development at the time, introduced technical and aesthetic solutions deriving from the car business to the nautical sector. The Ottantacinque concept project comes from a similar approach, and is the result of two leading Italian companies coming together to create one of the fullest expressions of Italian luxury. It therefore provides strategic added value for both companies in the extremely demanding mega yacht production sector. This is also authoritatively emphasised by Paolo Pininfarina, Chairman of the Pininfarina Group, who describes the result of the process with evident satisfaction: “She is a seagoing custom build, in line with the Pininfarina brand’s natural focus on creating exclusive projects that combine tradition with innovative solutions. That is how our design team imagined the result of our collaboration with Fincantieri Yachts from the very beginning. The end product is a statuesque floating home with elegant, dynamic surfaces where style meets function, aerodynamics, on-board comfort and ergonomics. Every detail has been designed to be in harmony with the aesthetic theme of the vessel.” This technologically advanced new project is a superbly innovative synthesis of simplicity and functionality with beauty and comfort, offered to the client as a symbol of the utmost exclusive style and prestigious luxury. Infinite intelligence and know-how is concentrated in the relevant dimensions, “ottantacinque” (85) metres in length and five decks in height. The shipyard’s initial notes shed light on some of Ottantacinque’s most significant characteristics. The aft section on the main deck features twin swimming pools raised almost in line with the balustrade, together with a raised sunbathing area that offers a constant 360-degree panoramic view of the sea. The pools have a mobile base that allows the depth of the water to be adjusted right up to zero, when it creates a large open air platform with an area of more than 160 m2, ready for social events on board. The spa receives natural light filtering through the water and the glass walls of the twin pools with magical effect. At night, it undergoes a bewitching transformation: the swimming pools become the light-filled centrepieces of the main deck, lighting up the beach club and the spa area in their turn. The light also filters through the water and the glass walls alongside the staircase up to the main deck, which runs between the twin pools, to bring light and enthralling reflections to the beach bar area as well. This imaginative beach club can be expanded out towards the sea by opening the transom and side hatches to form terraces overhanging the water to create a total area of 180 m2. Guests can enjoy a plethora of convenient facilities for peaceful relaxation or dynamic sporting activity. Like the twin swimming pool area and the beach club area, the access ways from one deck of the motor yacht to another have been designed to offer a further sensory experience. For example, there is the charming interplay of lights carefully designed for the lift and the spiral staircase, combined to form a skilful lighting system with the natural light flooding the space from the skylight built into the top deck. The magnificent main deck salon, also full of light, is laid out like an unusual loft space, having been specially designed for maximum versatility in both charter and private use. The various different sections of this innovative multi-faceted space can either be merged or virtually separated in order to meet the owner’s individual requirements, creating any layout they wish. From the living space to the dining space, the lounge, the piano bar, the cinema room or the party space, there is room and inspiration for any type of arrangement for the most sophisticated entertainment to meet all the owner’s needs and wishes. The ceiling openings in the large salon increase the feeling of a huge space and volume to spectacular effect, visually connecting this area with the owner’s lounge above on the upper deck. The owner’s private deck has a sensational infinity pool offering an extraordinary panoramic view, and the bridge deck also features a large touch and go helipad that can be accessed directly from the lobby for the lift and spiral staircase.
